Mangaluru : The Bharath Bandh called by the ruling Congress, Janata Dal and other parties in state on Monday seen early morning stoning of a private bus and a KSRTC bus each in the city and in Bantwal led to stoppage of movement of private and KSRTC buses.
Police said a private bus coming to the city from Bengaluru was stoned near a hotel opposite to Balmatta Post Office around 6 a.m. Similarly, a KSRTC bus coming to the city from Bengaluru was stoned on Bantwal bypass road around 6.30 a.m reportedly by two men on a motorcycle.
The police said stones were also thrown on a hotel in Shivabagh in the city.
Private city bus operators, who expressed their moral support for the bandh call, did not operate buses since morning. Even KSRTC buses from Mangaluru and Puttur divisions were off the road.
With few autorickshaws operating in the city, commuters arriving at the KSRTC bus stand, and to the Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction railway stations found it difficult to reach their houses. There were less takers in the morning for the initiative of Mangaluru City South MLA D. Vedavyas Kamath to arrange vehicles for commuters who are stranded.
Schools and colleges remained closed for the day. More police personnel have been deployed in sensitive areas in Mangaluru and Bantwal to maintain law and order.
