Mangalore: Senior Music Critic A. Ishwarayya has referred to a recent Compact disc, issued by a practising doctor based in Uppinagady, Dr. Rai, as its producer working for 2 months to bring it out as the first CD of 10 Tulu compositions (Kritis) tuned to Carnatic music, released at a function of Tulu Sahitya Academy at its open hall (chavadi) here in city on Friday, may 27, with Palthady Rama-Krishna Achar, Academy President, present on the occasion.
A 15 year old girl K.P. Priyanka, studying in 10th standard , and learning music since she was 3, besides passing senior grade examination in Carnatic music presently, song all the 15 Tulu songs, originally written by Bhadragiri Achuta Dasa, Poet Pundur venkataraja Puminchathaya, Haridasi Udupi Yashodamma, and Shreeshadasa. Senior Violinist T.G. Gopalakrishnan has composed the music, with Suresh Babu playing on Mridangam. Dr. Rai’s passion for music prompted him to make on album of tree Tulu Kritis in Carnatic style.
A decade old plan had been realized now, Dr. Rai told the gathering of Tulu people, on now Friday.
Three decades ago, an audio musical cassette of light music in the Tulu was made, with Padmacharan directing the music, but it was not classical in essence, critic Ishwarayya informed.
The present CD has classical compositions in raga (time) Hamsadhwani and Athana. Priyanka gave a vocal concert at the Chavadi, beginning with Achyutha Dasa’s ‘Aane Moneda-’ (Ganapathi) and then rendered “Yepala Krishna-” by yashodamma tuned by Gopalakrishnan, who was a Malayalee, not knowing Tulu lines.
Dr. Bhaskarananda Kumar of Tulu Koota, Udupi, released this first Tulu CD in Carnatic music on Friday. He exhorted people to speak Tulu and circulate it in larger gatherings so it can live.
Dr. Palthady complained that Tulu parents and teachers did not support Tulu as optional language from 6th class onwards. Priyanka’s music teacher Ms. Satyavathi Mudambadithaya was present. Gopalakrishnan was teaching Priyanka to play on violin. Not man Tuluvas could sing Kritis in Carnatic music.
