Mangalore: As a part of 2nd phase of the movement to provide door numbers and ownership papers, a protest rally was held on Monday at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office gates here in the morning hours.
Sunil Kumar Bajal, Secretary, addressed the gathering. Lingappa Nanthoor another leader was present. CPI (M) organised the demonstrations.
The seacoast under MCC limits at Thannirbavi near the new Port area is a tourist spot for visitors to roam about, but to those poor families the region is full of struggle to make both ends meet. These coastal 300 hundred families live here since many generations. Most of them are Dalit and downtrodden. None of them have benefited from state development plans that are popular and friendly elsewhere. These poor cousins of those citizens living in Mangalore have received only ill-treatment from MCC and BJP govt. while seeking their votes during elections, Bajal explained to his listeners at the rally.
A memorandum has been already presented to MCC authorities after a procession and massive Dharna held on 2011-10 (last year) seeking citizenship benefits for these 300 Dalit families, such as power supply, water connection, roads, monthly old age pension and the like. But no administrative action has been taken so far to mitigate their day-to-day problems, he added.
The state govt will do well to intervene immediately to restore citizenship rights and door numbers to the houses of this Thannirbavi colony of Dalits and disregarded people, the CPI(M) leader exhorted.
Baby, Madhava, Shameem Bhanu among others were present
