Mumbai : The historical Jagannath Puri Ratha Yatra was held on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 in great devotion and pomp, without untoward incidents and terrorist attacks, when 8 to 10 lakhs of people pulled the three chariots of Sri Krishna, Subhadra and Balarama on the main streets of Puri, a holy town on the East Coast in Orissa. The word ‘Juggernaut’ in English literature suggests any thing huge and large under the British Raj. This great Cars Festival takes place in Ashada (rainy season) Shukla Paksha (moon waxing fortnight) second day, as per Oriya traditional calendar.
The traditional sweeping of 3 chariots this year was done by the Raja of Puri. A similar procession was taken out in Banjara Hills in Andhra, at Hyderabad, when governor Narasimhan swept the 3 cars as devotees.
