Mangaluru : As many as eight shops demolished for road widening works by public works department, near K S Hegde Hospital at Deralakatte here on Friday March 13.
These eight petty shops including three differently abled people operating shops had been served notices of eviction 12 days back. The shopkeepers alleged that the department has been making rich and poor with different yardsticks and that poor people are facing injustice.
The shop owners alleged that, they have no alternate way to lives without arrangements, PWD suddenly snatched our livelihood they said.
The PWD contractors and local panchayat have assured one of the affected shopkeepers is Poornima Pai, a differently abled woman who is a newspaper agent . In fact the shop was allotted to her by the Social Welfare Department almost two decades ago. Poornima lives all by herself at a rented house at Bagambila.
Ulla police oversaw law and order situation during the said demolitions.
