New Delhi: Marking an incremental transition in the Congress, party vice-president Rahul Gandhi held an informal meeting with Congress Working Committee members on Friday evening.
Neither party president Sonia Gandhi nor Prime Minister Manmohan Singh attended the meeting. Party sources said the agenda was open and the conversation revolved around the manifesto for the general elections.
Even as Mr. Gandhi takes more control of the party’s affairs, making pronouncements on policy issues, the 15th Lok Sabha’s last session that concluded on Friday saw his mother withdrawing further.
There was no general body meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Party, of which Ms. Gandhi is the chairperson. As a result, party MPs did not get to interact with her or Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during the session ahead of the elections.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Gandhi met anti-corruption and disability rights activists on Rajpath, and said he would request the Prime Minister to see if the pending Bills dealing with disability rights and tackling corruption could be enacted through an ordinance.
Speaking at the launch of the National Youth Policy, 2014, and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan, he said politicians should keep out of sports bodies.
