Mangaluru : A family travelling to Mumbai from Udupi would have lost gold ornaments worth more than Rs. 3.8 lakh but for prompt action by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel attached to Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. (KRCL).

The family did not even know that they had left the trolley bag containing the valuables behind at the Udupi Railway Station itself until RPF enquired with them at Madgaon in Goa.

RPF Inspector Basappa Lamani and Constable P. Pramod were instrumental in retrieving the bag on time.

The RPF personnel, who were on regular rounds, saw an unclaimed bag on Platform No. 1 on February 21 at around 7 p.m.

They took the bag to the Station Master’s chamber and prepared an inventory report in the presence of the Station Master.

The bag contained gold ornaments — four gold chains, one gold necklace, two gold bangles, 13 gold rings, six sets of gold earrings, one packet of earring accessories and two original birth certificates. KRCL in a release here said the approximate value of the ornaments was around Rs. 3.84 lakh.

After ascertaining the owner of the bag through the records present in it, it was found that the owner was travelling with his family by Matsyagandha Express in S2 Coach.

After identifying the seat number in the coach, a message was sent to RPF, Madgaon, who contacted the passenger, who realised his fault. The family was returning from their native place near Udupi after celebrating the first birthday of its twin daughters.

As the family was not able to get down and go back to Udupi to collect the bag, the owner asked his brother-in-law and sister to collect the bag from RPF, Udupi. The personnel handed over the bag to the relatives after due verification, the release said.
