Puttur: Hundreds of impatient and disturbed farmers, demanding quick suspension of Uppinagady hydel power projects taking shape in Puttur Taluk, laid a siege to the local Assistant Commissioner’s office, under the action banner of Raitha Sangha on Monday, Feb.13.
The storming of Ac’s office lasted for over 10 hours was a record disallowing any work in the office, on Monday.
The protest was supported by JD (s) and JayaKarnataka organisation. The sate Raitha Sangha had made its intention clear in advance.
The agitation was organised to protest the interests of farmers from Nekkilady /Hirebandady villages, who would be ultimately thrown out by the power project, named Saharalingeshwar.
The farmers demanded market price such as they would decide, to part with their lands, or would not give any land otherwise.
But the company had acquired some lands and stared their work. Yet, the demonstrators said they would not permit such work, without obtaining full consent of all farmers involved in the area. Ac Mudraje Sunder Bhat was not ready to co-operate with them, so they surrounded the Ac’s office, and squatted on the floor.
Repeated discussion held with parties involved, failed to any effect on the angry agitators. Around 8-30 in the night,, they relented to Ac’s promise of visiting the project site and taking suitable action on Feb.14.
The taking suitable action ended, but just begun.
