Mangaluru : Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim, Police Commissioner S. Murugan and Superintendent of Police Sharanappa S.D. garlanded statue of Mahatma Gandhi At the Gandhi Park on Friday, October 2.
Addressing the students, Mr. Ibrahim regretted that peace, solidarity and other qualities that Mahatma Gandhi stood for was missing. “Remembering his qualities should not be an one day affair,” he said and stressed on building the society where there was respect for each other’s religion.
Mr. Murugan, Mr. Sharanappa and President of Dakshina Kannada Sahitya Parishat Pradeep Kumar Kalkura also spoke. Giri Ramakka, an elderly folk singer, sang a Tulu Paadaana (a couplet).
A booklet on State Government schemes based on Gandhiji’s ideals was released. The District Congress Committee, Vikas College and other organisations and institutions had Gandhi Jayanti celebrations.
Students, who came to the Gandhi Park on Friday, had the privilege of seeing some rare photographs of Mahatma Gandhi’s visit to Mangaluru and other regions in the State.
Among them was one taken on February 2, 1934 when Mahatma Gandhi visited the city as part of his Harijan Yatra.
There were also photographs of Gandhiji attending the Congress session in Belgaum in 1924, of his visits to Hadali village in Belgaum district, Magadi, Kengeri, Yeshwantpur, Basavanagudi and other parts of Bengaluru.
The exhibition was organised by the Information and Publicity Department. Earlier, students took part in a procession organised by Bharat Seva Dal from Ambedkar Circle.
