Brahmavar : In a road accident retired DySP and President’s medal winner B J Bhandary died in a road mishapin Brahmavar on Monday, June 1.
It is said, Bhandary was crossing the road near Hotel Ashraya in Brahmavar after attending his relatives wedding , a speeding car knocked him down. Bhandary who sustained grievous injuries was shifted to Manipal Hospital where he breathed his last in the noon.
The car was moving from Udupi towards Kundapur. Its driver Abdul Rahim has been arrested.
B J Bhandary who hailed from Belthangady taluk joined the police department in 1979 and served as deputy superintendent of police (DySP) in District Crime Record Bureau (DCRB).
Bhandary had also served as an assistant commissioner of police (ACP) in Mangaluru apart from serving in Mandya, Bengaluru, Chickmagalur, City Crime Bureau (CCB), State Intelligence and Lokayukta department.
He was a recipient of Chief Minister’s medal twice in 1991 and 2007. Recognising his service, the government had conferred him with President’s medal in 2011.
He had also formed ‘Retired Police Officers’ Association’ which is touted as the first such initiative in the district formed for the welfare of former police officers in the region.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 2 at his native.
