Mangalore: The increasing cases of vector borne diseases in Mangalore in the recent past, has forced citizens to think if at all the Mangalore City Corporation has failed to combat the menace. There is no denying that precious time is wasted by the councilors during MCC meets, by resorting to mudslinging and clashing.
As per the statistics available with the Social Action Group for Empowerment(SAGE), the city topped the other urban centres in the nation as far as malaria was concerned. PV Mohan, Convenor of SAGE says three Malaria deaths have taken place in the city last month.
Even Suresh Shetty, former president of the Malaria (Biological) Control Committee, feels the MCC has failed to effectively tackle the problem. Dr Srinivas Kakkilaya, a physician alleges that only 10 percent of the Malaria cases are recorded in books by the MCC administration and the rest are deliberately hidden.
Mayor Gulzar Banu meanwhile says the Malaria eradication drive has been outsourced to a private firm and that though students too have been made part of the drive, they can do justice as they have to even attend classes.
