Bangalore: Munna, known as a ‘Sharp Shooter’ in criminal circles, was killed and a police sub-inspector critically injured in a shootout incident here on Wednesday.
Mallikarjun Bande, PSI (Crime) of Station Bazar Police Station, shot at point-blank range by the rowdy, has been admitted to Basaveshwar Hospital with critical injuries to his head.
His condition is said to be serious. Assistant Sub-Inspector Uddandappa of Roza Police Station, who received bullet injuries, has been shifted to Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh for treatment. Another PSI, Murali of Bazar Station, who suffered a bullet injury on his ear, is said to be out of danger.
Raid
The incident occurred when a crime team raided a house on Dargah Road following a tip-off that Munna was in possession of illegal arms and staying there. He was also suspected to have been involved in a daylight armed robbery at a private finance company in the city recently.
Police returned fire when Munna shot at them. He suffered multiple bullet wounds and is said to have died on the way to hospital. Based out of Mumbai, he used to visit Gulbarga periodically in connection with his underworld activities.
Inspector General of Police Wazir Mohammed Ahmed of North-Eastern Range and Superintendent of Police Amit Singh visited the shootout spot. Plan to shift the wounded PSI in a helicopter to Hyderabad is said to have been dropped due to his critical condition.
The incident has evoked anger among the people of Gulbarga with several organisations staging a protest demonstration in front of the hospital against the collapse of law and order and failure of the police to contain ever-increasing crime.
