Mangaluru : Mangaluru Directorate of Revenue Intelligence arrested Chattanchal Abdul Razak (49) from Kasargod and seized four gold bars weighing 349.80 grams worth Rs 10.5 lakh when he attempted to smuggle the bars into the country on Wednesday.
The officials, acting on a tip off, intercepted him on Wednesday at Mangaluru International Airport soon after he arrived from Dubai by Spice Jet flight SG 60 at around 6.30 pm. After a thorough interrogation, he confessed that he had hidden the gold in his body and it was safely removed after consulting a medical professional. The said gold bars were said to be of 24 carats. The gold was seized by the DRI officers under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
Abdul Razak admitted that he had been smuggling gold regularly and his passport revealed that he had landed at various airports including Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmadabad, Chennai, Kochi, Trivandrum, Kozhikode, Bengaluru, Goa and Lucknow.
