Mangaluru: Daksihna Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel on Saturday directed the South-Western Railway (SWR) authorities to carry out survey for construction of a road underbridge that helps Mermajal residents and students studying in institutions in Valachchil and surrounding areas.
Chairing a meeting regarding railway works related to Mysuru Division of the SWR here, Mr. Kateel said there was need of an RUB to prevent hardship for residents and students who move in large numbers across the two railway level crossings in the area.
The SWR officers said a RUB could be built near the Yashaswini Hall on the Farangipet-Mermajal Road if the two level crossings in the area are closed.
Mr. Kateel said a RUB near the Hall would increase the distance to reach Mermajal. “Carry out a survey of the area and have an RUB at a location that would cause the least inconvenience to Mermajal residents. Educational institutions can be roped in to fund construction of the RUB,” he said.
Widening
A representative from Vivekananda Group Institutions in Puttur said the institution has proposed widening of the bridge near Nehru Nagar that would ease traffic movement in the area and also help vehicles coming to the engineering and other institutions of the group.
The representative said the SWR has come forward to do the work but the amount quoted by it was too high.
Mr. Kateel asked SWR officials to carry out the survey for widening of the bridge and also construction of RUB on the Puttur APMC Road.
Mangaluru South MLA D.Vedavyas Kamath, Mangaluru North MLA Y. Bharath Shetty, Puttur MLA Sanjeeva Matandoor and Bantwal MLA Rajesh Naik U. attended the meeting.
Additional Divisional Railway Manager A.K. Sinha was among officials from SWR Mysuru Division who were present.
