Bangalore: Two months ago about 170 stalls in historic Russell Market of British cantonment area in the mega city, were reined in a major fire.
The Govt stepped in to pay compensation and with local financial support, renovation of the market took place quickly.
The shop- keepers who were in misery, are now happy as the business of selling fruits vegetables and provisions, has started from Monday (April 23) itself, due to their own co-operative enterprise.
On Feb.25, 126 shops were totally charred out and many others partially burnt down. CM Gowda visited the scene and announced a release of Rs 33 Lakhs towards compensation for losses incurred.
The shopkeepers collected about Rs 1.50 Crores, to renovate all shops affected by the devastating fire. The godowns will be ready in a few more days, the shopkeepers informed.
The BESCOM had cut off power since 2 months, and did not restore connection yet. The BBMP did not clean up the battered and charred area so the shopkeepers did the job.
Generators are installed to continue business at sundown. By the time BBMP wake up renovation was already over, said the businessmen mocking at BBMP.
