Mangalore : Mangalore city corporation (MCC) officials demolished a structure belonging to Sarvajaanika Ganeshotava Samiti at Markada near Kavoor on July 2, Saturday.
The officials took the steps following complaints that it was constructed on government land.
According to the sources, Samithi had built the construction on 150 metre of government land reserved for road. Later Kunjathbail corporator Mohammed had raised the issue and demanded to demolish the building in the meeting held on July 30.
It is learnt that the structure was being used for dress rehearsals and other activities related to Samithi’s programmes.
Sarvajanika Ganeshotsava Samiti joint director Sunil said that, the MCC had taken the step due to the political influence. There are many hotels, bars and shops constructed illegally in the same area, but MCC has not take action against them.
Whereas Markada corporator Harinath had earlier assured to protect the structure, but within three days of the council meeting, it has been demolished.
He also stated that corporator Mohammed’s relative had constructed a house on government land and even after filing complaint against it no action has been taken so far.
The people gathered during the demolished staged protest against MCC’s move and warned to move to DC and demand to demolish other illegal constructions too.
