Bangalore : The Lokayukta police have arrested a headmistress and a headmaster of government schools for demanding bribe from a private aided school, in return for a favourable report on the implementation of Right to Education Act (RTE).
The arrested are Ramadevi of Government High School, Tippagondanahalli and Prakash of Government High School, Cholanayakanahalli, both in Bangalore South taluk.
A complaint was registered by Lokayukta Inspector (City Division) V Anil Kumar on January 17. Anil Kumar was tipped off that a team of nominated members formed by the deputy director of the Department of Public Instructions, Bangalore South district, were inspecting Vasavi Vidyaniketana High School in Basavanagudi, an aided school.
The team members had demanded that the school management pay each of them Rs 750 for a report on favourable implementation of RTE in their school. The team is also said to have threatened the school management of giving an adverse report in case they were not paid the bribe amount.
On January 18, a search was conducted and the Lokayukta police found a cover with Ramadevi’s name on it. It contained Rs 1,000 in cash. Similarly, the police found Rs 10,750 in possession of vice principal of school Sridevi.
