Mangalore: Prof. M H Krishnaiah, president of Karnataka Sahithya Academy said that in spite from being from different cultural background, Herman Moegling served immensely to Kannada literature.
He was speaking at the valedictory of international seminar on ‘Herman Moegling-200th year of his commemoration’ organized by Karnataka Theological College in association with Karnataka Sahithya Academy and Kittel Foundation held at KTC Bishop Jathanna Hall.
Speaking about Moegling, he said that he was born in Germany and started the first Kannada newspaper ‘Mangaloora Samachara’ in Mangalore in the year 1843. The newspaper was was one that was beyond religion and showed his interest in the life, language and culture of this land and that traditional Kannada literature was collected by him.
The two day seminar focused the personality of Moegling.
The book, ‘A Guide to the Basel Mission India Material in the Mission 21 Archive’ by Paul Jenkins, a senior researcher of Switzerland was released.
Dr Hanibal Cabral, principal of Karnataka Theological College, Rathnakar Sadananda, director and others were present.
