Mangaluru : The Mangaluru City corporation Mayor Premananda Shetty has appealed the residents to separate wastes as dry and wet waste at the source itself and co-operate with the door-to-door waste collectors before it is handed over.
Speaking to reporters on May 21, Friday, he said, People should cooperate with MCC in scientific disposal of solid waste, and segregate dry and wet waste. This will help in solid waste processing. Scientific segregation of the waste should be done compulsorily.
He said incidents like the garbage slip that was reported at Pachanady landfill- Mandarabail area a few years ago could be averted if waste is segregated at source. He said as the Covid cases in the city are increasing and as many are in home isolation, there is chance of the workers involved in waste segregation contracting Covid.
CCTV cameras would be installed to keep an eye on who dumped on roadside at some places in the city, and added that as per the rules a maximum of Rs 25,000 penalty would be imposed and criminal case filed.
He also said, those generating large quantity of wastes if decide to manage the waste through a composting unit such people would get 50% rebate in solid waste cess.

City Corporation Commissioner Akshy Sridhar said as of now of the 250 tonnes wastes generated, 100 tonnes are arriving without segregation. Awareness is being conducted on waste segregation and those who fail to adhere to rules will have to face penalty, he added. Bio-medical wastes must be wrapped in paper or yellow coloured bio-bag so that it can be scientifically disposed, he said.
Deputy Mayor Sumangala Rao, Joint Commissioner Dr Santosh Kumar, Corporation Health Officer Manjayya Shetty were also present.
