Mangaluru : The 40 pillars at service bus stand in the city were cleaned and painted during the 11th shramdaan, organised by the Ramakrishna Mission, as part of its last phase of the five-year Swachhta Abhiyan in the city, on Sunday.
The volunteers continued their shramdaan at the service bus stand area to complete the works taken up a week ago. The bus stand was cleaned and heaps of garbage in the vicinity were removed. Pots with flowering plants were placed in the area to prevent dumping of garbage.
Several old seats were broken down and of no use. Volunteers decided to fix concrete seats at the bus stand. Last Sunday, about 15 seats had been fixed. This Sunday, 25 more were fixed.
The compound walls of Canara College, facing M.G. Road, were cleaned and painted with works showcasing art and cultural forms of Tulunadu like Yakshagana, Daivaradhane, Kambala, Koli Anka, Huli Kunita, etc.
Artist Dinesh Holla who inaugurated the shramdaan said that if everyone felt that the environment belonged to them and attempted to preserve it, cleanliness could be maintained easily.
