Mangaluru : Concretising of Shiradi Ghat road will be completed ahead of schedule and the stretch would be re-opened for traffic from June 1, District In-charge Minister B Ramanath Rai said on Tuesday.
Tenders for awarding second phase of the Rs 155 crore Shiradi Ghat road concretisation project is likely to be finalised by the Centre on April 24, Rai added.
The paving of concrete beds was done after dusk with help of Slipform paver machine procured from Germany at a cost of Rs 6.5 crore.
After inspecting works in Shiradi Ghat, Rai told media persons that in first phase, Rs 69 crore is being spent on concretising 23 km (both left and right stretch) of the road. In the second phase, a 13-km stretch from Kempehole to Addole would be concretised and a distance of 21 km from Gulagalale to Maranahalli would be asphalted at a cost of Rs 85 crore.
The tenders floated for the second phase were rejected as only one firm had submitted the bid.
However, this time two entities are vying to implement the project and the contractor will be decided when the bids are opened on Friday, he said.
The works of the second phase of the project are likely to be taken up in October.
Rai said he interacted with residents of Kalladka in Bantwal taluk who were opposing the widening of the existing NH 75.
“The residents insisted on a flyover or a bypass,’’ Rai said and added that a decision keeping the interests of residents in mind will be taken. National Highways Authority of India’s (NHAI) proposal to widen the road from Hassan to Bantwal (excluding stretch in Shiradi Ghat) is likely to be implemented soon, DK Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said. NHAI officials and contractors, however, clarified that ‘miscellaneous works’ like road fences would be carried out after the monsoon.
