New the Food and Civil Supplies Minister, a Woman, has again promised to distribute BPL cards to the economically and socially backward community of ‘Mangalamukhis’ (Hijras).

The Power and Civil Supplies Minister addressed a meeting of Karnataka Women’s Development Corporation, after inaugurating the event, on Thursday.

She has called for applications from these Hijra women (trans-vests) and received some, for action. Shobha said that these applications would be scrutimised for distributing ration cards to them.

A detailed survey of these women has never been conducted so far, but new that will be done, the minister said.

The Hijras are not covered by any card or other arrangement to supply food grains, but some organisations have been contacted for discussions, she said.

Industries minister Murugesh Nirani, Ramchandre Gowda of State Planing Commission, senior journalist Dr. Purnima, and State Women’s Development Corporation chairperson Sarojini Bhardwaj, among others, participated in the women’s programme.
