Mangalore: Ambigara(Fisherman) Chowdaiah’s teachings on moral principles to be implemented in contemporary life, were still relevant, although he, belonged to 12th century, with Basavanna as a social reformer, and the lessons he taught were apt to a modern globalized shrunken world, where you can steal from your neighbouring countries such practices as can destroy your own culture, said Dalit leader and writer, Prof. Baraguru Ramachandrappa, who inaugurated a new chair in Mangalore(Konaje) University, at the Old Senate Hall for Ambiga Chowdaiah onJanuary25, and stressed that his teachings could be followed by a disapproved of casteistic culture and untouchability, as he had represented the working class in 12th century, where hard work ruled above caste. He was sharp in his talks, Baraguru observed, denoting a confidence in his utterings.
Baraguru lauded Mangalore University having chairs on Nehru, Buddha, Ambedkar, and now, Ambigara Chowdaiah, to uphold secularism, justice and other values fulfilling younger generation’s needs.
The Vice-chancellor Dr. T.C. S. Murthy presided on the occasion, and told the gathering that MU would study fishermen in the coastal region to raise their status and conduct research studies.
Ambiga is one who ferries people from one shore(world) to the other(God) in spiritual terms.
