Mangaluru : The city police arrested six persons, including a person who has undergone detention under the Goonda Act, for an alleged attempt to rob a person on the Tannirbhavi Beach Road on Sunday.
The police have identified the accused as Safan Hussain (33), Mohammed Faisal (33), Abdul Nasir (34), Shamsuddin (27), Umar Farooq (25) and Mohammed Ansar (30).
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) K. Shantaraju told presspersons on Sunday that on a tip-off the Central Crime Branch sleuths arrested the six who were attempting to rob and murder a wealthy person.
The police have recovered two countrymade pistols, seven live bullets, two machetes, three mobile phones, a car and an autorickshaw.
Safan Hussain is an accused in 23 criminal cases, including that of the rape of a medico in Deralatte in December 2013.
He was also among the eight persons arrested in the rape case.
The city police had invoked Goonda Act (The Karnataka Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug-Offenders, Gamblers, Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders and Slum-Grabbers Act) against him in December 2015 for which he underwent detention and was released two months ago.
Mohammed Faisal and Shamsuddin are accused in eight criminal cases, including an attempt to murder, dacoity and kidnap cases
Abdul Nasir was involved in nine criminal cases that includes cases for causing communal trouble.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sanjeev Patil said investigation was on to find from where the accused got pistols.
They are also exploring the possible underworld link to the act of accused in robbing the wealthy person.
