Mangalore : Department of Statistics of St Agnes College ( Autonomous) sponsored by UGC New Delhi organized Two-day State Level Seminar on the topic ” Statistical Methods For Practice” at Conference Hall of the college on September 12 and 13.
Speaking after inaugurating the seminar, Deputy Commissioner Ibrahim Adoor said that Statistics plays a significant role in every fields of human activity. Apart from it, its role in existing position of per capita income, unemployment, population growth rate, housing and schooling medical facilities in a country is a major one. At present, it holds a central position in almost every field like Industry, Commerce, Trade, Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics, Biology, Botany, Psychology, Astronomy too.
Chief guest Dr P Venkatesan – Deputy Director/HOD of Statistics-National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis, Chennai Said that statistics must be both reliable and relevant. They need to be compiled correctly, following standard practices and methodology. Statistics must meet the needs of users and answer the questions posed by policymakers.
He also said that most of the time developing countries face a number of problems in providing statistics that meet these criteria. They often find themselves caught under-investment in national statistical systems constrains activities and results in data of poor quality, which policymakers are unwilling to rely on.
Prof. Srivenkataramana-Director-MBA/MCA Program at Brindavan College, Bangalore; Prof. Ashok-Bangalore University; Dr (Sr) Marie Prem D’Souza AC-Principal of St Agnes College; and Prof. Shubharekha participated as the chief guest.

Prof. Ashok-Bangalore University will present seminar on ‘Data Collection-selection of Tools’; Prof. Srivenkataramana-Brindavan College, Bangalore on ‘ Design of Questionnaire and Related issues’; Prof. RP Suresh-Accenture, Bangalore on ‘ Recent Trends in Data Collection’; Prof. TPM Pakkala- Mangalore University on ‘ Towards Data Mining’; Prof. Jayakrishna Udupa- Bangalore on ‘ Analysis of Business Data sets’; Prof. Duraisamy- Madras Christian College, Chennai on ‘ Statistical Techniques for Economics’; Prof. Balakrishna -Cochin University of Science & Technology, Cochin on ‘ Regression Models for Statistical Error Analysis’; and Dr Asha Kamath- Manipal University on ‘ Statistics for Life Sciences & Modern Analysis Techniques using Statistical Softwares’ as the resource persons in the two day seminar.
