Mangalore : Even as the repair works of a water supply pipeline by MCC workers was underway close by the compound wall of the St Antony’s Ashram at Jeppu was underway, the high rise compound wall collapsed on March 12, Tuesday morning. The pipeline works were then suspended.
According to reports, there was a leakage in water pipe and so a JCB and a few workers were engaged in the repair works on March 12. As the JCB was removing mud and dumping it nearby, the compound wall collapsed.
Fr George, Assistant Director of the St Antony Charitable institutions said the Ashram had nearly 400 inmates and was nearly 110 years old. He said at least Rs 10 lakh may be required to rebuild the wall.
Jacintha Alfred, local corporator, who rushed to the spot, assured steps to see that the MCC rebuilt the compound wall. She said the pipeline work was initiated as there was a leakage.
