Mangalore, Dec 4: The Health & Family Welfare Services, Dakshina Kannada and UNICEF jointly organized a stake holder’s consultation on Infant Death Review System at RAPCC Hall on December 4, Saturday.
Chief guest P Shivashankar, CEO of Zilla Panchayath, DK said that State government has selected Dakshina Kannada and Raichur district for the UNICEF, in order to compare between mist forward and backward district for IMR rate.
He also said that, reporting system in India is not good and hence it should be tightened. In this matter, the situation of rural system has improved because of the ASHA workers, but there are no ASHA workers to trace the report, he said.
Presiding over the event, DC Subodh Yadav said that, in developed countries the infant mortality rate is 2- 3 percent, but in Dakshina Kannada it is 1- percent. In Udupi, the mortality rate is 9 percent and it is the best district in Karnataka, he informed.
Comparing to Gulbarga and Bijapur, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi is the best, which has least infant mortality rate. Infant mortality is always connected to development of the region. When the region is developed, there will be less infant mortality rate, he said.
Most of the time, the death of the infant will go unnoticed and will be rarely reported, hence most of the reports on the Infant Mortality Rate will not be true, he added.
Prof S Shivananda, director of Indira Institute of Child Health, Bangalore, Prof B S Baliga, HOD, Department of Paediatrics, KMC, Mangalore and Dr Sanjeev Upadyaya, Health and Nutrition Specialist, UNICEF, Hyderabad were also the chief guest and the resource person at the seminar.
