Mulky: An unfortunate woman since her marriage to Madhava who was 30 years, Sulochana went with her husband to Mumbai for four or five years and returned to DK district to Ajar near Kateel in Mangalore taluk. She was originally from Kallyanpur in Udupi taluk. The couple had no problems till then, but slowly, Madhava Poojary drove away his mother and sister out of his house and confined his wife Sulochana in a room for 20 years, harassing her every now and then, even locking her of up from the front door when he was going out to work.
Hearing her cries her neighbors use to pass on food through the window in to her room to enable her to live on despite violence created by her husband when he was in the house. Some men in the neighborhood even supported him for his inhuman atrocities committed against Sulochana, who was suffering all insults for two long decades.
Finally, a complaint went out to the woman’s welfare department officials and to the nearest police in the area who arrived with media persons to the spot and rescued Sulochana from the clutches of Madhava Poojary (55), who had harassed his wife Sulochana (48).
The police took Poojary in to custody and registered a case of assault, attempt to kill, and inhuman confinement under various sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The woman’s welfare department officer Shyamla, Kalpana, Asha and others helped Sulochana in her extremely bad state of health to get in to Mulky government hospital to improve her conditions, in an act of rescue.
