Sumatra West Coast quakes at 8.9-Tremors felt in Karnataka

N S ChannappaMangalore: An earthquake of 8.9 degree intensity on the Richter Scale was felt off the west coast of northern Sumatra island in Indonesia archipelago on Wednesday, April 11. Indian states and cities responded with tremors.

Tremors were felt in Mangalore this afternoon(April 11), when DC Dr. N.S. Channappa Gowda called an emergency meeting of pressmen to say that police, coast guard, fire and emergency services were put on alert.

Those fishermen on high seas have been asked to return, and warning has been issued to others not to venture out in to fishing.

People residing near seashores are warned to go to safer places. The DC stated that the city is geared to face any eventuality.

Tremors were felt both in Mangalore and Bangalore, and people ran out of buildings in panic at Lighthouse hill and Kodialbail. Tremors occurred in Udupi, Manipal, Vamanjoor and areas nearby. In Bangalore some buildings were damaged and Metro rail halted halfway.

Hubli, Kolar, Davanagere, Chennai, Patna and Kokata recorded mild tremors. There were no casualties at sea or on land.
