New Delhi: The post-mortem report of Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar has cited drug overdose as the cause of her death, sources said on Monday.
The sources, citing the report said that her death was due to overdose of medicines and that a police team led by the SDM had recovered anti-depressant and other drugs from her suite in The Leela hotel where she was found dead.
The post-mortem reportedly also states that there were more than 12 injuries on Sunanda’s body. However, these were not fatal in nature, the sources said, citing the report.
The post-mortem report was submitted to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate who met doctors at the AIIMS medical hospital along with a team of police officials on Monday.
On Sunday, the SDM questioned Shashi Tharoor over his links to Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar. Tharoor himself recorded his statement before the SDM, the most important part of the probe, as he was the first person to discover Sunanda’s death.
Sources have told that Tharoor was questioned about the circumstances leading to Sunanda’s death, about their relationship since marriage and about his relations with Mehr Tarar.
Sunanda’s son, her brother and personal aides were also questioned and so was Sunanda’s friend and journalist Nalini Singh who had told that she spoke to Sunanda the night before her death.
The SDM has questioned Tharoor and his personal staff about the sequence of events leading to Sunanda’s death and also about the differences the couple had. Now that these crucial statements have been recorded, the police are confident that the magisterial inquiry will be over soon and the cause of Sunanda’s death will be clear in the next two days.
Tharoor himself had written a letter to the Home Minister seeking a speedy probe. He has expressed anger over media reports saying, “I am horrified to read the reckless speculation rampant in media. I am appealing to you to issue instructions to expedite the investigations so that the truth emerges at the earliest. Nothing short of the truth will end the indignity to which my wife and I are being subjected.”
The SDM probe is most likely to be over by Tuesday or Wednesday.
