Mangaluru: Ramakrishna Mission’s 20th week Swachhata abhiyan drive was organized at Bejai Kapikad area on Sunday. Dr Dhanesh Kumar K U, principal, Nitte College of Physiotherapy and Kuddroli Ganesh, eminent magician flagged off the drive in the presence of Swami Jitakamananda, head of Ramakrishna Mission, Mangaluru.
Dr Dhanesh said, “Swachhata abhiyan should not be for show off but should spring out of genuine concern for local cleanliness.”
Roads leading from Kapikad petrol bunk were divided among volunteers for cleaning. Both sides of the road from Kapikad to Bejai Bus stand were cleaned by two groups. Two more team of volunteers took up cleanliness work in Anegundi road.
Students of Nitte Physiotherapy College cleaned the road and adjoining drains in Kapikad by removing the plastic papers and sweeping the area. Volunteers cleaned an area near petrol bunk which was littered with plastic waste.
With the intention of benefitting local public, six direction boards depicting names of roads which were faded and not serving any purpose were cleaned and repainted. Direction boards in Netaji Road in Bejai Kapikad, Kirodian Lane, 1st Cross, 2nd Cross and 6th cross were repainted. Volunteers of Swachh Mangaluru abhiyan removed several flex banners and hoardings in Jyothi (Ambedkar) Circle, Kankanadi, PVS, Kodialbail and Hampankatta areas.
Students of St Aloysius College under the guidance of lecturers visited houses and shops door to door distributing awareness handbills and urging them to keep their areas clean. Prashanth Raj of Bhumika Water Suppliers volunteered to clean the roads swept by washing it with water and watered the plants planted on the road dividers. Compound walls of Karangalpady Market cleaned in the previous week’s drive were beautified with nice decorative thematic drawings..
