Karwar: Sri Gangadharendra Saraswathi Swamiji of Swarnavalli Mutt has said that all four units of the Kaiga nuclear power plant should be shut down until the health survey by the Tata Memorial Centre proved that the plant does not cause any health hazard.
He was speaking at a meeting of Kali Valley environment awareness campaign and the Save Kali at Keravadi on Sunday, June 17.
The seer further said that he was strongly against setting up of fifth and sixth units of the Kaiga plant and added the new units were also awaiting clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests.
It was observed in the meeting that the Kali valley has been greatly affected by the several factories on the banks of the river and even opined that the Kaiga plant too has done much damage.
There is a need to take steps to protect the valley, the meeting strongly felt.
Anant Hegde Ashisara, Chairman of the Western Ghat Task Force, said a movement will be launched if the government goes ahead with the fifth and sixth units of Kaiga.
