Mangaluru: The coastal Karnataka city, is gearing up to hold the National Federation Cup athletics meet from May 1 to May 4.
More than 700 athletes from all the states and boards are expected to participate in as many as 47 events of the Federation Cup, where the Indian team for the Asian Athletics Championship Meet scheduled in June the World Athletics Championship Meet scheduled for August, both in China, would be selected.
Federation President Adilla Sumariwalla held a preparatory meeting with Karnataka and Dakshina Kannada Athletics Associations, people’s representatives and district officials here on Sunday. He later told presspersons that the Federation wants to offer the best of the facilities to athletes in the event.
Karnataka Athletics Association President and State Congress President, G. Parameshwara said the associations and the government would provide all the required facilities. Various committees would be formed for various purposes. Karnataka Minister of State for Youth Empowerment and Sports, K. Abhayachabdra Jain said that the department would immediately rake up improvement works at Mangala Stadium, the event venue.
Deputy Commissioner, A.B. Ibrahim said the administration would extend all the support to make the event successful. Mayor Mahabala Marla and others were present.
