Thumbe vented dam: MCC to give Rs 3 crore compensation to 18 farmers

Thumbe vented damMangaluru: Mangaluru City Corporation has decided to pay Rs 3 crore as compensation to 18 farmers whose land would be partially submerged once water at the new Thumbe vented dam was stored at up to 5 meters.

Mohammed Nazir, Commissioner addressing the Karnataka Development Programme Review Committee meeting said that the survey on the land that would be submerged was completed. He informed that of the 30.64 acres land that would be submerged, 18.12 acres was private land while the rest was government land. Water at the dam would be stored from summer.

The Mangaluru City Corporation will utilize its funds to pay the compensation. The amount will then be reimbursed by the government under the Asian Development Bank (ADB) loan scheme.

With regard to the proposed bus stand at Pumpwell in the city, Commissioner Nazir informed that the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) was yet to submit the report on financial and physical feasibility of the project.

District in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai said that the project had to come up at Pumpwell as there was no other suitable site for the project. It is said that though several rounds of meetings were held, the project was yet to take shape.
