Mangaluru : The traffic advisory committees at the three traffic police stations will become proactive and involve members of resident welfare associations while addressing problems related to traffic management, said Police Commissioner T.R. Suresh here on Friday.

Answering a call during the weekly phone-in programme, Mr. Suresh said that a traffic advisory committee each has been formed in the East, West and North Traffic police stations, respectively, to study traffic problems and give suggestions to the police. These committees, which has members from a cross-section of society, were meeting regularly and have been working effectively for the last few weeks.

On the suggestion to involve more residents in the traffic improvement exercise, Mr. Suresh said that he will ask the committees to hold meeting with members of the resident welfare associations of the areas where changes are proposed. The members of the committees will hear problems and accept suggestions from residents, he said.

There were many calls seeking steps to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists. A resident of Bondel expressed the need for light reflectors or caution boards near Bondel Junction and KHB Colony to prevent accidents. He said that there was a need to replace the rumble strips that had worn out in many areas in the city.

A resident of Surathkal asked the police to take steps that will help pedestrians to cross the road near Govindadasa College. He said that the pedestrian underpass located near the college was of no use. A resident of Yekkur wanted the police to move the bus stop near the Fisheries College further down to avoid piling up of vehicles.

Another resident of Yekkur said that there have many cases of petrol being stolen from two-wheelers in the Meginamane locality. A resident of Karangalpady asked the police to check smoking in public near Canara College. When a caller said that some city buses still did not provide tickets to passengers, Mr. Suresh said that special squads will be set up to look into the matter. Another caller said that senior citizens still found it hard to get seats in city buses.
