Mangalore: The state govt has on Sept.30 made it mandatory for 2 wheeler riders to wear standard helmets. The order is applicable within the jurisdiction of all city Corporations in the state.
It appears that hitherto helmets were compulsory in Mysore and Bengaluru city areas. Presently, the Commissioner of road safely, Bhaskar Rao, has instructed all traffic policemen to implement the helmet rule strictly in all cities.
He noted that 2 wheeler drivers, not wearing helmets while moving on their vehicles, lost their lives. Rao referred to deaths on the roads going up. The injured persons got crippled for life, he noticed. The administration had to keep the safety of general public, road users and scooter riders as well, in mind.
Plastic helmets reasonable caps on top meant for miners and road construction workers. Actual helmets are heavy and protect the head of a 2-wheeler driver, Rao confirmed.
