Mangalore: The Tulunadu (DK) Rakshana Vedike (TRV) works for the coastal district (Tulu-speaking region) development and unity of Tulu people who have not received recognition for either the Tulu language (a classical dialect dating back to ancient Greece 2000 years back), or the Tulu culture/traditions from Parashurama’s hoary adventures against erring Kshatriyas (warrior kings), symbolised by yakshagana war episodes and fishing.
The TRV this week sent a letter to Deputy Commissioner, DK dt. Dr.N.S. Chennappa Gowda, seeking his protection for seaside families in Bengre region where they are being driven out of their old settlements by a heartless Government that acquires their land, without as much as an introspection.
Muneer and Srikanth, leaders, tried to convince the DC that the fishermen staying near rivers and seasides cannot be ousted under any circumstances, when they have lived there for long years, adopting themselves to the waterfront situations. People of all religious and communities live there without fights, doing fishing jobs, on rough seas.
But the Mangalore Tahsildar who visited the area on 27-06-2011 asked the people to vacate within a week, and came back on 6-8-2011 morning with police help and razed the houses to the ground in haphazard manner. As the fishing season is beginning on Aug. 16, we request you not to forcibly evict us from our natural habitats in this cruel manner, failing which we will be constrained to fight our case more severely, they said.
