Mangaluru : Two vessels, which left old Mangaluru Port on Tuesday, capsized near Kavaratti island of Lakshadweep on Friday in Cyclone Ockhi. All 14 crew members of the vessels are said to have been rescued, according to sources.
According to information reaching the old Port Office here, Al-Noor of Lakshadweep and Jevar Hussain of Tuticorin left the Mangaluru Port with groceries and construction material, respectively, on Tuesday.
While Al-Noor had six crew members, the other vessel had eight crew members. The two vessels have been in this business for several years.
On Friday morning, the two vessels reached the Kavaratti island but could not find berth in the port. As they were waiting for berthing in the sea, the two vessels got stuck in cyclone Ockhi. Al Noor capsized first, followed by Jevar Hussain.
An official from the Old Port office in Mangaluru said that there were reports that all the 14 crew members have been rescued by the Indian Coast Guard. But it was yet to be confirmed from his counterparts in Lakshadweep, he said.
Meanwhile, four boats were stuck in heavy winds in the estuary near the Old Port (or Fishing Harbour) here on Friday.
They were finding it difficult to reach the Fishing Harbour. Later, they were allowed to enter the New Mangaluru Port, Deputy Director of Fisheries Mahesh Kumar said.
