Udupi: Udupi bandh called by various organisations and locals against toll collection at Hejamadi and Sasthan toll gates in Udupi district has hit vehicular movement on national highway 66 which connects Mangaluru city with Udupi on February 13.
Private vehicles including two wheeler, cars, jeeps are moving on NH whereas buses, autos, taxis and other means of public transport have remained static.The protesters are urging the contract company Navayuga to exempt them from toll collection and finish the works related to four laning of NH, service roads, bus waiting sheds, facilities in the toll gates and others.
Section 144 has been enforced by the district administration to prevent protests by the agitators. However, the protesters reached the toll gates in the morning protesting the toll collection and subsequently they were arrested by the police. The prohibitory orders have been put in place from 6 pm on February 10 to midnight on February 15. Meanwhile, the Udupi shutdown hasn’t yet affected the normal life in Udupi city. The bandh has only limited to national highway 66 and its surrounding areas and towns.
