Udupi: City Municipal Council President P Yuvaraj presented a surplus budget of Rs 1.52 crore for Udupi CMC for the year 2014-15, at a special meeting at the Council hall on Saturday.
The budget of Rs 73.44 crore includes the Central and State government’s funds, and a major portion reserved for various developmental works and providing basic facilities to the city including drinking water supply, solid waste management, underground drainage, residential complex for migrant labourers and road development.
Presenting the budget, the CMC President announced that Rs 20 lakh will be spent on rejuvenating public wells in CMC limits in order to avoid drinking water problem in summer and Rs two crore will be reserved for developing underground drainage. A plan has been included in the budget to construct residential complex for migrant workers with the help of central and state governments, and give the houses for rent. Land has been identified for the purpose.
A sum of Rs 2.75 crore has been reserved for the development of scheduled caste and scheduled tribes, Rs 10.50 crore has been reserved for asphalting roads and construction of drainage.
The budget proposes to develop Gandhi Bhavan in the city at a cost of Rs 50 lakh and give special emphasis to support sports, develop the stadium, converting street lights as LED lights in different phases, construction of residential complexes for CMC employees, hi-tech and mobile toilets, bus stands, develop markets.Further, the CMC President said that the Council has proposed Rs one crore project to the government for underground drainage connection to Manipal, Malpe, Puttur and Santhekatte.
Rs one crore has been reserved for the construction of two commercial complexes for improving financial resources in the CMC.
During the discussion, opposition party member Herga Dinkar Shetty suggested that more importance should be given to providing education and employment to Scheduled Caste and Tribe members.
