Udupi: Minister for Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fisheries Abhayachandra Jain said that a stadium will be developed at Udupi district at a cost of Rs two crore.
He was speaking at state-level women’s sports meet organised by Udupi district administration, Zilla Panchayat, Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan (RGKA) Mission at Ajjarakadu Mahatma Gandhi district stadium.
He also said that synthetic track in Udupi district will be a model for the entire state. The district stadium will be developed with the fund of Rs one crore which will be released by Rajya Sabha member and Rs one crore by the state government. Whereas a sum of Rs 50 lakh has already been released Under MPLAD from the project, he added.
Jain also said that State government has given Rs 25 lakh to gold medalist Poovamma and Rs 15 lakh to Vikas Gowda for bringing laurels to the states by winning medals at Asian Games at Incheon.
He also said that the government has decided to host a national-level inter-university sports meet at Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri in January 2015 and National level Rajeev Gandhi Khel Abhiyan sports meet Udupi from December 18 to 20.
International athlete Apsara Rohith Kateel inaugurated the sports meet.
MLA Pramod Madhwaraj presided over the programme.
District-in-Charge and Urban development minister Vinay Kumar Sorake said that there is a need to support sports persons and athletes.
