Udupi: The School Adoption Scheme has led to the improvement of infrastructure and facilities of some government schools in Udupi. Some schools have been given funds by individual donors while in other cases Committees of Donors and School Development and Management Committees have collected funds. In some others, the funds from both the donors and the Legislator’s Local Area Development Fund have been used together to improve infrastructure. Under the Adoption Scheme, the donors and the schools sign an agreement for improvement of infrastructure and facilities.
According to the information provided by the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) here, a Donor’s Committee has been responsible for the construction of three classrooms, a library, a laboratory, a hall at the Sundara Puranika Government High School at Pervaji in Karkala.
“Along with the funds raised by the donors, the legislators too had contributed money from their Local Area Development Fund for improvement in the infrastructure. Donors have contributed funds though their children do not study here”, said K. Harishini, Headmistress of the school.
An alumnus of the Volakadu Government High School in Udupi, Ramadas Kamath U., who is Senior Vice President at Infosys, Bangalore, donated a total of Rs. 2 crore for the infrastructure development of the school from 2000 to 2011.
This amount was used for construction of a two-storied building, a computer lab, a library, a toilet complex, improvement of playground and other facilities.
Satish Prabhu, also an alumnus of the school has been providing Rs. 57,000 every month to provide curd along with mid-day meals to students. B. Nirmala, Headmistress of Volakadu Government High School, said: “Due to facilities provided by the donors, our student strength is increasing annually. Our school is considered among the model Government schools in the district and State”.
“The modern facilities provided in our school has definitely helped us in our education” said Rakshita and Shreya, students of class nine of the school.
