Udupi: Superintendent of Police Laxman B. Nimbargi said recently that the district police would launch a drive against those not wearing seat belts in four-wheeler vehicles, those illegally putting up circular boards in front of their vehicles stating their position, and those using tinted glasses on their vehicles.

Speaking to press persons during an hour-long phone-in programme, Mr. Nimbargi said the drive against shrill horns and silencers held a fortnight ago had positive results. He said the police would also be taking a number of measures on road safety and traffic management in the district. Many awareness programmes and rallies on road safety are planned in schools, he said.

A woman caller said it had become difficult for two-wheeler riders to move about on the road from Tiger Circle to MIT Junction in Manipal as cars were being recklessly parked on both sides of this four-lane road. Mr. Nimbargi said more traffic police staff would be deployed to prevent cars and other vehicles from being parked on roadsides.

A caller said the heads of some organisations and some individuals were using small circular boards on their cars and multi-utility vehicles illegally. Mr. Nimbargi said joint action by the police and the Regional Transport Office would be launched on this.

A former municipal councillor complained that there was a big pothole at the Kadiyali School junction on NH 169A and asked that it be filled, lest it lead to accidents. Mr. Nimbargi said he would take up the matter with the authorities concerned.

A caller from Belapu said that water gets filled in a big area at Vinay Nagar in the village during monsoon, but there is no board warning people against venturing there. The SP said he would ask the authorities to install a board there.
