Mangaluru :The students of the Dakshina Kannada region came second in terms of overall pass percentage in the II year Pre-University Examination 2017, the results of which were announced on Thursday.
Total 34,382 freshers who wrote the examination this year, 30,915 have passed (89.92 %).
In the last three years, the district ranked first with the number of freshers, who passed at 28,351 (90.48 %) in 2016, 29,226 (93.09 %) in 2015 and 29,377 (86.04 %) in 2014. According to official figures, 38,568 students, which includes freshers, wrote the II PU examination this year.
Of these, 32,578 students passed, which includes 30,915 freshers, 1,620 private students and 43 repeaters.
Of those who have passed, 17,367 were girls and 15,211 were boys.
There were more students (21,387) from urban than rural areas (9,828) among those who passed the examination.
Science stream saw the highest number of students clearing the examination with 13,850 out of the 14,978.
As many as 13,651 of the 14,906 students passed in Commerce, while 3,414 of the 4,498 students cleared the examination in Arts.
Darshan P., a student of St. Aloysius PU College, who secured 593 marks in Commerce, said that he intended to become a charted accountant. Mr. Darshan said he loves accounting and hence wants to pursue his dream of becoming a charted accountant.
His father Satish works in a private firm while his mother Dayavathi is homemaker.
Results
Udupi (90.01%) topped this year, Dakshina Kannada (89.92%) and Uttara Kannada (71.99%) ranked second and fourth respectively. Kodagu occupied the third slot.
