Mangalore: Ugadi is the first day in a new Calendar Year of Hindus based on Chandramana(lunar Counting) or Sauramana(Solar counting)
Dr. Jayantha H., a keen enthusiast in astronomy and skywatcher working as lecturer in St. Agnes College, organised a camp in Spoorthi Complex in Kulashekhar on Tuesday, March 20, late in the evening and explained in detail the meaning of celebrating Yugadi festival, with its intricacies in traditions and faiths.
Prof. Jayanth insisted that Ugadi actually should be held as on March 20, the day of equinox, when daytime and night time are equal at 12 hours. So he held the camp on March 20 here.
A group of hobbyists in astronomy and stargazers, even students, gathered on the terrace where telescopes were installed to look t a dimly lit, cloudy sky.
An overhead LED projector was used for the demonstration. There was a question-and –answer session, on many topics like, solar system and observances with an earthly nature, cultures, and communities.
The 90 minute session was embellishing with the teacher explaining everything in full details to the eager.
