Kasaragod: Those who use plantain bunches to catch fish will no longer be allowed to have their way in Kerala, as district collectors (DC) are strict about enforcing traditional ways of nets and against basis of fruits which appears non-conventional. The tribals in some island groups, such as Andaman and Laccadives (Laksha Dweepa), the aborigines use spears to catch fish, it may be noted but modern fishermen take nets to catch fish everywhere. Those who defy rules for peculiar non-traditional methods, would be arrested by coastal police and fisheries deptt, would be kept informed of such persons.
A group of fishermen from Kanyakumari, fishing in Kasaragod / Kanhangad beaches had used coconut stumps (without leaves / nuts) recently and the matter was reported to the fisheries department. Rotten coconut stems emit a dirty liquid that could attract fish but the latter could become sick after absorbing the rotten liquid, the Govt, realized. The entire fish population could be exterminated by the disease, the deptt, found. As such, prohibition of unconventional fishing methods was imposed.
The DC has issued orders to guard against Tamil fishermen who go to the extent of using wrong methods in Nileshwar / Kasaragod seas, and arrest them.
