Mangaluru : Union Government under Swachha Bharath Abhiyaan has given approval to the MCC for the promotion of city compost.
Mayor Harinath, while addressing the Press at Mangaluru City Corporation on May 9 Tuesday, Mayor Harinath said that market development assistance an amount of Rs. 1500 per ton will be provided for scaling up production and utilization of the city compost
Existing fertilizer companies will initially market and promote city compost. Further compost manufacturers and other market entities recognized by the state government, may also be included for the purpose, with the approval of fertilizer companies. Assistance shall be routed through the entity which is marketing it for development.
The fertilizer marketing companies shall be eligible for an account payment up to 50% only on the basis of first point sale at the district level. Fertilizer companies and marketing groups will also co-market city compost with chemical fertilizers through their dealer’s network, he informed.
City Compost will be utilized by Government departments and public sector undertakings as much as possible for their horticulture and related use. On the benefits of city compost, a campaing wil be carried out by Department of Agriculture, co-operation and farmers welfare to educate farmers.
The average production is 275 tons of waste per day and from November 2014 according to MCC Commissioner Dr. H.N.Gopalkrishna which is very less and till today we managed to generate 3200 metric tons of waste for which we get Rs 1.56 lakhs of revenue per month.
Speaking about water woes in the city, have increased due to interruption in electricity as a result of which is that some areas were getting water once in every five days or so. And such areas water supplied through water tankers, he said.
Water from the Lakya Dam of KIOCL is being seriously consider due to the acute water scarcity, and MCC is thinking of using, pumping about 6 MGD water from that dam and the same is sufficient to meet drinking water requirement of Panambur and Surathkal area.
