Mangalore: All under trials lodged in the old sub-jail of Mangalore, were on October 31, Wednesday shifted to the new premises of the jail located nearby. It may be mentioned here that the new jail building despite completion of construction three years ago remained unoccupied until now.
This latest development, after the recent brawl in the prison on Bakrid day over the issue of supplying Biriyani to the inmates.
In the meantime, PS Ambekar, the superintendent of Mangalore prison has been transferred to Hiriadka jail of Udupi. It may be recalled here that Mangalore jail warden Puttanna Achar was earlier suspended from service in connection with the clash.
Reports said the shifting of under trials took place amid high security to avert any untoward incidents.
The DIG of Prisons had recently inspected the new jail building. It may be mentioned here that the old building of the jail was overcrowded with over 280 prisoners though it could at the most accommodate 150.
