Mangalore : The UPCL Thermal plant at Ellur near Padubidri has recommenced power generation thereby bringing a sigh of relief for people of the two district who were reeling under frequent power cuts sine the past few days.
It is learnt, the power generation has recommenced after Chief Minister assured the company of clearing the arrears to the tune of Rs 1500 crores.
UPCL had stopped power generation in both its units soon after Shobha Karandlaje quit as energy minister. The minister had earlier given a promise to clear arrears, but had failed to fulfill the promise. However, coal shortage was cited the reason for the suspension of power generation.
The power supply is expected to return to normalcy in the district very soon. Meanwhile a consignment of 70000 tonnes of coal has reached UPCL and another consignment is said to be on way and expected to arrive in a week’s time.
