Udupi: A protest was staged in front of the SP office on December 27, Thursday by the International Federation of Karnataka Christian Associations, Komu Sauharda Vedike and other like-minded organizations seeking action against Bhajrangdal activists who opposed a banner put up outside Stella Maris Church at Kalmady and also forced the church authorities to remove the banner and tender apology.
The protestors also urged that the complaint lodged by the Hindu outfit against the church parish priest Fr Alban D’Souza be withdrawn.
A memorandum submitted by the organizations to the police authorities said around 200 Bhajrangdal activists had barged into the church premises that day and hurled abuses against the parish priest. They also questioned why no action was taken against the activists.
The memorandum also complained that several posters with Om printed on them were seen in public walls and had writings that hurt sentiments of minority communities.
Yet another demand placed was to initiate action against cops who resorted to lathi charge against CPI(M) members who were protesting against Made Snana.
President of Komu Souharda Vedike G Rajashekar, Louis Lobo of IFKCA, Jayan Malpe and others spoke.
Various organizations like District Minority Forum, Karnataka Dalit Sangharsha Samiti, Jamath-e-Islami Hind, Catholic Sabha, SIO, PFI and others took part in the protest.
